Future of the Car: Driving EV Adoption with Battery Lifecycle Management

EVs hold great promise in helping solve the sustainable mobility conundrum. Unfortunately, the tipping point in global EV adoption is still far off. The reasons for this are many: higher cost vs. internal combustion engine vehicles, range anxiety, unreliable charging station infrastructure, and more. One key way to address the EV’s total cost of ownership (TCO) is to focus on the heart of all EVs, the battery. Leveraging battery management technologies enables you to enhance performance, battery lifecycle, faster charging, and more.

In this fascinating video, hear from Roger Keen—ADI General Manager, Battery Management Systems—as he discusses utilizing battery lifecycle insights and how ADI is empowering the automotive value chain with its wireless battery management system (wBMS).

Reducing EV Total Cost of Ownership

One key element in helping accelerate EV adoption is the issue of smarter, more efficient battery packs and electric powertrains. An EV’s TCO is heavily affected by many factors concerning battery technology and lifecycle management, including battery formation and test (BFT), battery pack design and assembly, EV operations management, and battery circular economy.

ADI’s Wireless Battery Management System (wBMS)

ADI’s wBMS is a complete, system-level solution including hardware and a completely new wireless protocol stack that supports over-the-air, software updates, and the highest automotive cybersecurity qualification. Eliminating wiring makes EVs faster to design and manufacture and brings secure intelligence at the edge to the battery cells. GM is one of the earliest adopters of ADI’s wBMS, which has been instrumental in GM’s development of its Ultium EV platform and the scale of its EV fleet.

Delivering Advanced Insights into EV Battery Lifecycle

Until now, battery lifecycle insights have been the missing link for the value chain. ADI’s wBMS delivers real-time data insights across the battery lifecycle by utilizing precise sensing, edge processing, embedded software, and wireless communication links. These insights can help improve the lifetime value of the battery, and the EV’s operational performance, essentially converting the battery into a technologically advanced asset.

Innovating at the System Level

Across the automotive value chain, there is a greater drive to accelerate EV technology, with many of these advancements achieved via over-the-air software updates. But the hardware needed to support these technologies must be scalable through the long term to support these software updates. System-level design innovations are needed to deliver more complete solutions, ensure faster time to market, and maximize ROI for the value chain—all of which enhances the EV’s TCO.
