CAREPREDICT: HARNESSING THE POWER OF DATA TO ENHANCE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR SENIORS

How do you care for aging loved ones without taking away their freedom—or sacrificing your own?

For many families, it’s not an option to take senior parents into their own home to keep a closer eye on them, as most people lack the financial resources, medical knowledge, or time to dedicate to full-time or even part-time care. Yet many feel it’s too impersonal (or simply too soon) to offload loved ones into an elder care facility or retirement home when they are still mostly capable of living independently.

Wearable, digital health technology, such as the wrist-worn CarePredict Tempo™ health monitoring device, could be the solution to help care for elderly loved ones. To help CarePredict, Analog Devices delivered advanced, wearable technologies within an incredible runway—saving 10 months of development time.

AT A GLANCE

COMPANY

CarePredict, headquartered near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, develops monitoring systems designed to improve the quality of life of seniors.

GOAL

Generate accurate, real-time data to help caregivers stay on top of their charges’ potential health issues in a noninvasive format, all while providing insight and peace of mind to family members.

CHALLENGE

The Tempo wearable health monitoring device required accurate biosensors and fuel gauges, power-efficient switching regulators, and high performing audio amplifiers in a small, battery-powered footprint with expected long runtime.

SOLUTION

Collaborating with ADI engineers, CarePredict was able to create the sensor module for the Tempo wearable, which monitors pulse oximetry and heart rate, in just 6 weeks—a fraction of the industry’s normal turnaround time.

COLLABORATING FOR CARE: CAREPREDICT AND ADI

As the CarePredict team evaluated IC companies, they began working with ADI. Through collaboration and cocreation, the CarePredict team found the technologies and support they needed in ADI to successfully build their platform.

CarePredict benefited from ADI’s catalog of high quality components that support quick and easy development. ADI also helped CarePredict check the boxes for low power consumption, high accuracy, and compact form factors ideal for wearable health technology.

Modern sensor innovations and improvements have made it possible to offer more granular and actionable data than some of the original solutions to this problem. For example, older technologies like motion sensors cannot provide detailed insights, simply basic motion tracking.

CarePredict’s Tempo wearable health monitoring device can monitor the wearer no matter their location—bedroom, kitchen, or a bathroom. Through a combination of data and AI, Tempo helps families and caregivers identify subtle changes such as eating less, sleeping poorly, or becoming more sedentary, which could signify more serious health issues.

HOW TEMPO HELPS MONITOR ELDERLY LOVED ONES

The CarePredict digital health platform uses precise location sensors in the Tempo wearable to track the behavior, patterns, and deviations of each elderly user. The system, which is used in senior living facilities and private homes, relies on biosensors, deep learning algorithms, and predictive analytics to provide actionable insights to caregivers. These insights can help caregivers predict potentially serious health conditions like urinary tract infections, depression, or fall risks. The Tempo Series 3 for the home was met with much acclaim when it debuted and was named a CES 2020 Innovation Award honoree in the wearables category and again in 2021 and 2023, an unprecedented 3 times!

Gesture Recognition

Worn on the elder’s dominant arm, the Tempo wearable uses gesture recognition to identify various activities, such as when the wearer is lifting a fork to their mouth. What’s more, it remains true to its name by learning the daily tempo of individual wearers and can detect and report shifts in behavior to trigger early intervention. Wearers can even push a button on the device to contact a caregiver or, with the home version, speak to a family member.

Actionable Insights

In addition, the CarePredict TouchPoint app offers real-time data and insights to family members at the touch of a button. This gives families a detailed understanding of their loved one’s current condition and whether there have been any concerning changes in their daily routine, such as skipping meals or being less active than they used to be.

SOLVING TECH CHALLENGES, FAST

Creating such a complex, yet easy-to-use health monitoring system required an array of underlying technologies: accurate biosensors and fuel gauges, power-efficient switching regulators, and high performing audio amplifiers, to name a few. The Tempo wearable is compact and battery-powered, so the components also needed to support its small footprint and expected long runtime.

The CarePredict team worked closely with ADI engineers to create the sensor module for the Tempo wearable, which monitors pulse oximetry and heart rate. Typically, a sensor module like this takes at least a year to incorporate into a design. But by partnering with ADI, CarePredict was able to complete development on its sensor module in 6 weeks, saving more than 10 months in development time while also meeting accuracy, power consumption, and form factor targets. This enabled CarePredict to shift focus to other aspects of their design, such as refining the software.

"All of our devices use ADI fuel gauges because they're the most accurate. ADI really pulled out all the stops and showed us what is possible."

FOREVER PROTECTING OUR MOST VULNERABLE POPULATION

Happy senior woman spending quality time with her daughter outdoors.

Thanks to medical advancements, more individuals are able to live fuller lives deep into their golden years. However, this may be both a blessing and a curse for the global population, as it presents complex new challenges around how to care for the rapidly expanding elderly populace.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations (UN), among others, the aging population is growing faster than new generations can keep up. How will we address the needs of ageing populations during this demographic shift? With younger caretakers outnumbered by their elderly charges, tools like the Tempo wearable health monitor will play an essential role in serving the elder demographic.

“Continuous monitoring of vulnerable populations is an absolute must-have,” said CarePredict CEO Satish Movva. “Through our collaboration with ADI, we’re helping seniors live longer, safer, healthier lives, and giving families peace of mind.”
