Three-terminal reference regulators – viz., the AD580 – are emerging as low-cost circuit elements with suprisingly diverse uses. Though the original application for such devices was in providing small amounts of local regulated power, new uses are continually emerging, ranging from precision reference supplies (V & I), to stable level shifters, current sources and sinks, and high-performance ramp generators, plus a multitude of miscellaneous applications where "something more versatile or efficient than a Zener" (at only slightly greater cost) is desired, in a circuit or a system design (for example, in D/A and A/D converters).
