Switching Regulators

Analog Devices’ SRAM memory supplies and bus termination products are the ideal choice for DDR, QDR memory, SSTL logic, and HSTL interfaces for high speed FPGAs and processors, as well as other advanced portable microprocessor-based systems, that support high bandwidth applications such as PCIe, cloud-based systems, RAID, video processing, and networking. DDR and QDR memories require three voltage rails: bus supply voltage (VDD), bus termination voltage (VTT), and reference voltage (VREF). The bus termination voltage (VTT) and reference voltage (VREF) must track to ½ bus supply voltage (VDD), and the bus termination voltage (VTT) also requires a current sink and source function. Our portfolio of DDR/QDR memory bus termination products supports the powering needs of i.MX, PXA, ARM, OMAP, and other advanced microprocessors, offering voltage-mode and current-mode switching regulator topologies, very low input voltages, adjustable switching frequency operation, and ultra-thin packaging.

Analog Devices’ portfolio of flyback and forward controllers provides a simple cost-effective replacement of dc-to-dc converter bricks used in isolated and non-isolated applications. Power levels of up to 100 W using a flyback controller and up to a few kilowatts with a forward controller can be attained. Analog Devices’ proprietary iCoupler® technology is integrated in several forward controllers, which eliminates bulky signal transformers and optocouplers that transmit signals over the isolation boundary. Many of the flyback controllers do not need an optocoupler, which reduces design complexity and cost, while improving overall system reliability. Several off-the-shelf transformers for both topologies are shown in the product data sheets, which further simplifies the design and allows for the fastest time to market.

Analog Devices’ line of dc-to-dc invertering switching regulators is specifically designed to invert input voltages to negative outputs. It offers input voltage ranges from 1 V to 64 V with switch currents from as little as 100 mA up to 10 A. Notable features include integrated Schottky diodes, fixed frequency operation, a programmable current limit, and low noise operation.

Products in this category offer two or more regulators, combining buck (step-down), boost (step-up), buck/boost (step-down / step-up), SEPIC, linear and/or inverting switching regulators in a single, compact package. Applications for these multitopology DC/DC products include split positive and negative supplies for high performance op amps, DACs, ADCs and signal conditioning circuitry, feature-rich portable, industrial or medical devices or space-constrained systems requiring multiple power supplies combined into a single, compact IC.

Analog Devices manufacturers a broad range of monolithic boost switching regulators and controllers that can be configured as SEPICs (single-ended primary inductor converters), along with other topologies, enabling universal use in a wide variety of applications. These SEPIC converters maintain a fixed output voltage regardless of whether the input voltage is above or below the input. These converters offer wide input voltage ranges, external synchronization, and, on some models, internal Schottky diodes. Other features include programmable current limit, burst-mode operation, and low battery detect.

This noise-cancelling technology increases system performance with ultralow EMI that passes CISPR 25 Class 5, higher efficiency across all loads, improved thermal performance, and higher achievable step-down ratios due to low minimum on times.

Harness the high efficiency of switching converters with the compact, space-saving architecture of a single inductor design for multipower rails applications. Analog Devices’ family of single inductor multiple outputs (SIMO) power management ICs provides multiple switching buck-boost regulators using only one single inductor. The high-efficiency conversions benefit and extend battery life, while the ultracompact size and low bill of materials provide a perfect solution for space constrained wearables, hearables, IoT, and other small form factor battery-powered consumer devices.
Additional integrated functionalities and features further simplify the design of low power portable devices by integrating functions such as battery management (charger and fuel gauging), LDO outputs for noise- sensitive rails, and on-board sequencer for controlled power-up and power-down. An I²C interface provides the capability to completely customize enables complete customization of the power management IC and supports dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) for additional power savings and custom power profiles.

This combination of features allows for very small, low profile buck switching regulator circuit implementations with minimum external components.
